Accurate use of language conventions in writing. A wide and apt vocabulary. Varied sentence structures used purposefully. Spelling and punctuation accurate to a level appropriate to the qualification.

This strand applies across all writing tasks in all three overlays — but is also separately assessed as its own AO. Functional Skills English Level 2 has detailed criteria here; AQA gives the SPaG strand a dedicated AO; Edexcel weaves it through AO5.
