Art-historical and cultural understanding. Artists’ methods and intentions. Movements, traditions, debates. Ethics of representation — whose voice, whose gaze, whose subject? This strand is woven through AO1 (investigating sources) and AO4 (realising intentions in dialogue with a tradition), but worth its own canonical home because it is what distinguishes Art and Design from craft alone.
