Externally-set assignment based on the same endorsed title as Component 1. The ESA paper is released in early February of the assessment year and includes a stimulus / theme that the learner responds to.

72 marks. 50% of grade. Internally assessed, externally moderated.

Two stages

Preparatory studies — extended period of investigation, experimentation, recording (no fixed time limit; usually around six weeks of normal teaching).

10-hour period of sustained focus under exam conditions — the learner produces their final response(s) based on their preparatory work. May take place over multiple sessions (maximum four sessions within three consecutive weeks). Once the sustained-focus period has started, all work — preparatory and final — must be retained by the centre under secure conditions; the learner must not have access to it between sessions.

Submission requirements

  • Three sheets of supporting studies (max A2 each)
  • One sheet of final outcome(s) (max A2)
  • Photographed evidence for 3D or oversized work
  • Coursework authentication sheet

NEO operational note

The 10-hour period of sustained focus under exam conditions is the part of this component that needs careful operational design for an online provision. NEO’s options:

  • Synchronous live-supervised sessions over Google Meet, with screen-sharing and webcam-on
  • Centre-arranged in-person sessions at a partner location
  • Negotiated alternative arrangements with Pearson where the learner’s needs require it

This is a relevant point for §10 Q3 in the schema (Edexcel IGCSE entry-centre arrangements for NEO learners) — Art and Design’s 10-hour period is one of the more demanding ESA designs and worth pinning down with Pearson early.

Tests canonical

The four AOs apply across the whole component, same weighting as Component 1.

Cross-overlay equivalent

AQA GCSE Art and Design also has an Externally Set Assignment (typically 10 hours of supervised time on the final response) but with a slightly different weighting (40% of qualification, not 50%) and slightly different administration. AQA’s terminology is “ESA” too.
