Preparing and delivering spoken language in formal contexts; listening to others and responding constructively; adapting register and content to audience. Across the three overlays this is treated differently — separately endorsed (Edexcel, AQA), or threaded into the qualification (FS Level 2).
Tested by
- E — Spoken Language Endorsement — optional, separately reported (Pass / Merit / Distinction / Not Classified); a 10-minute presentation
- AQA GCSE 8700 — Spoken Language Endorsement (AO7–AO9) — separately reported (Pass / Merit / Distinction)
- Pearson Edexcel FS English L2 — Speaking, Listening and Communication (SLC) (Ofqual 2018 §5) — a substantive component of the qualification, assessed via discussion / presentation tasks
Suggested evidence types
- Recorded presentation (10 minutes, with Q&A)
- Group discussion log
- Formal debate
- Interview-style dialogue
Mastery descriptors
- emerging — speaks in short turns; needs prompts to develop ideas
- developing — sustains a turn; some adaptation of register to audience; responds to questions
- secure — confident, sustained delivery; clear structure; adapts register; responds appropriately to questions
- mastering — sophisticated control of voice, pacing, structure; engages audience; handles challenge and Q&A fluently
Care note
For learners with EBSNA / SEMH backgrounds, spoken-language assessment requires careful pacing. The Edexcel Spoken Language Endorsement is optional — a learner can pass the IGCSE without it. The FS Level 2 SLC component is integral to the qualification but is delivered through low-stakes discussion / presentation in trusted small-group settings rather than formal performance.
