Reading complex texts at Level 2 — typically everyday non-fiction texts that adults encounter (workplace documents, public information, contracts, news articles, letters, complaints, instructions). The Level 2 expectation is to handle texts that may include unfamiliar vocabulary, implicit meaning, and persuasive or biased framing.

The published Subject Content lists the following Reading skills at Level 2 (paraphrased; verbatim text on the private side):

  • Identify the different situations when the main points are sufficient and when it is important to have specific details
  • Compare information, ideas and opinions in different texts, including how they are conveyed
  • Identify implicit and inferred meaning in texts
  • Understand the relationship between textual features and devices, and how they can be used to shape meaning for different audiences and purposes
  • Use a range of reference materials and resources (e.g. glossary, footnotes) to find information
  • Understand the difference between fact and opinion, and detect bias and persuasion
  • Read and understand texts which include presentational, structural, and organisational features (headings, sub-headings, bullets, layout, fonts, images)

Pearson Edexcel’s Reading test for FS L2 is on-demand and online. Texts in the test are drawn from real-world contexts (workplace, civic, consumer). Learners can retake without grade penalty — the lower-stakes nature is itself a pedagogical asset for EBSNA / SEMH learners.
